IDSA/ESCMID — Consensus Statements on Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia: Risk Stratification, Diagnostic Evaluation, and Management of Adults and Children
IDSA/ESCMID, 2026
For adults with S. aureus bacteremia, use risk stratification and ongoing reassessment; routinely obtain TTE, obtain follow-up blood cultures at about 48 hours and then every 24–48 hours until clearance, and use TEE selectively when endocarditis-risk features or management impact justify it rather than making TEE mandatory for every patient.
