AASLD 2024 — AASLD Practice Guidance on risk stratification and management of portal hypertension and varices in cirrhosis

American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, 2024

For acute variceal hemorrhage, combine prompt vasoactive therapy and endoscopic therapy with short-course antibacterial prophylaxis (commonly ceftriaxone 1 g IV daily in hospitalized patients where appropriate). Duration is generally no more than 7 days and should be individualized to clinical stability, hemorrhage control, discharge, local resistance and patient-specific factors rather than taught as an obligatory exact 7-day course.
