Safe ECMO management requires understanding of the drainage and return cannulae, centrifugal pump, membrane lung, heat exchanger, sweep-gas source, pressure monitoring and circuit safety systems. Trends in flow, pressures, gas transfer, visible clot and hemolysis should be interpreted together when circuit dysfunction is suspected.
