Albumin for people with liver cirrhosis and bacterial infections.
Simonetti RG et al., 2026 · 11 studies included
Summary
Eleven randomized trials, 1,273 adults, mixing SBP, non-SBP infection and sepsis-induced hypotension; all received antibiotics.
Conclusion
Overall mortality estimates were very uncertain: versus no intervention RR 0.80 (95% CI 0.53–1.20), versus other fluids RR 1.05 (0.85–1.29). Adverse-event evidence was also very uncertain. Do not generalize albumin to every cirrhotic infection or use this mixed-population estimate to erase separate SBP/HRS-specific guideline indications. Monitor pulmonary edema and volume tolerance.
